UK PORTS handle over 500 million tonnes of freight and more than 60 million passengers a year, making the UK ports sector the largest in Europe. UK ports vary widely in size and type of activity and the diverse cargos handled include building materials, cars, coal, cereals, manufactured goods, fruit and much more that the UK depends upon to support the economy and drive economic growth.
Over 95 per cent of UK imports and exports by volume (and 75 per cent by value) still pass through ports, which form an integral part of national and international logistics chains.
As well as handling a wide variety of goods and passengers, ports also carry out many important statutory duties, including safeguarding navigational safety and managing sophisticated security and environmental regimes
